I think the goal has to be meaningful to you, in order to truly dedicate yourself to it. I also think you have to have some fun along the way to make up for the times when it's not enjoyable, the times when you've had only five hours' sleep and it's five in the morning and you wake up with a headache and it's cold and rainy out and you have to go out anyway and just push through. You have to get enjoyment out of being in shape, of competing at your best level of performance, and in the training itself. Some days you know you're having a great workout, your paddle is flowing through the water just right and your technique feels like it's right on, and the boat is moving fast. It's like being on top of the world.

All your life you are told the things you cannot do. All your life they will say you're not good enough or strong enough or talented enough; they will say you're the wrong height or the wrong weight or the wrong type to play this or be this or achieve this. They will tell you no, a thousand times no, until all the no's become meaningless. All your life they will tell you no, quite firmly and very quickly. And you will tell them yes.
